“How Are You Going to Lift That?”

How do you determine what type of rigging equipment you need?

Many times throughout the manufacturing process it is necessary to move a piece of equipment, machinery or material to the next manufacturing process or shipping. The first question that should come up is how are we going to make our pick? We must make sure that we are using the safest means possible.

No matter if you are using nylon, wire rope or chain to make your pick, the thought process will start or end with the lifting point. It is very important to make sure there are holes to bolt the lifting point into or there is a place to attach the welded lifting points.

Once we decide on whether to bolt or weld our lifting point, we will need to decide the weight of our piece. This is very important due to the fact that this will determine the size and the number of points you will need to use. If you are unsure of your weight you may need to consult with your engineering department to calculate the weight. It is always best to caution on the heavy side and use a bigger lifting point than might be necessary. Other important factors to consider are:

1. Are the lifting points on the same plane or will my load be unsymmetrical? If so do I need to think about a shortening device on my sling?

2. What direction will my load be pulled in? Is the lifting point I wish to use able to be pulled in the direction that we are going to lift from?

3. Are there any obstructions on my work piece that I may need to compensate for?

After answering these questions you should be confident that the lifting points will be suitable for your lift. If you are unsure always ask a lifting professional before making your lift.

We hate to brag, but seriously, you cannot even tell that these benches have seen the hot summer sun and the harsh Iowa winters! We placed a couple of Intersit benches with Pagwood out in front of our corporate office, located in Hiawatha, IA. Not only do these benches see the hot blazing sun in the summer, these benches were buried under a mound of snow for most of the winter! Choosing Tire Protection Chains - The Necessary Accessory

Despite economic slowdowns, demand remains high for companies that can demonstrate competitiveness in quality, price, and delivery.

This maxim applies as much to the rough and tough industries - minerals, aggregates, fossil fuels, demolition, recycling and forestry - as it does to the 'soft' service sector.

Where load and haul is a central component of your operation, optimizing plant availability is the key to success and this success depends on skilled staff and a rigorous maintenance schedule with particular attention to the tires.

A good plant manager will make certain that both staff and machines are well-protected. For, without a full set of sound tires, as without a skilled operator, a loader or a truck is just an expensive, idle lump of metal.

No two sites are quite the same so it is essential to invest in tires that promise optimum serviceability.

The big name manufacturers such as, Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Michelin will be able to advise you or you may prefer to consult an established independent supplier such as T&C Site Services, that has wide knowledge of many brands and which will be able to advise the most appropriate tire for your job.

The considerations that apply to automotive tires are amplified many times over when it comes to selecting earthmover tires.

Each condition or combination of conditions must be matched by the appropriate tire construction and tread.

● Is the site wet, clayey or icy?

● Is the running surface abrasive powder, shingle or flint?

● How long and steep are the haul roads?

● What weights are you shifting?

● Do you work in extreme temperatures?

Then there is tire wear and tear.

Manufacturers do their best to make their tires abrasion resistant and 'bullet-proof' but the very flexibility, that makes a tire function as it should, is precisely what make it vulnerable to sidewall piercing,

If a tire wall is damaged, quick action may save the day but, however not matter how good the repair is, the tire will have lost some of its original integrity.

While T&C Site Services prefers to sell tires, their technical guru, Derek Adams, agrees that there are instances where tire protection chains are essential.

Dealing with a blown tire or repairing a machine that has skidded off-road is no-one's idea of a happy day so it is hardly surprising that, where tires are subject to excessive abrasion, vulnerable to sudden-death piercing or, because of impaired traction, become difficult to handle, tire protection chains (TPC) are considered essential.

Nowadays, the consideration is no longer whether or not to fit tire chains, as to who's brand and which type.

There are around ten tire chain manufacturers world-wide.

In the Far East, relative newcomers with challenging names offer a limited range of cheap chains.

These can be attractive to operators who's tire specifications match what is available and who, given the unknown standards of metallurgy and welding, are ready and able to carry out their own installation, tensioning and repairs.

Following a series of acquisitions and consolidations, Europe boasts very few tire chain manufacturers - notable amongst these are Pewag and RUD-Erlau.

Of these, following the introduction of versatile, pneumatic-tired loaders in the early '50s, RUD-Erlau built on their snow chain technology to develop and evolve the earthmover TPC into the sophisticated product we see in action today

From that early innovation, in 60 years, RUD-Erlau has grown to command some 65% of the world market.

So, when it comes to selecting the appropriate chain it is useful to benchmark RUD-Erlau's range.

No matter how well made and maintained, tires can suffer from unacceptably heavy abrasion to the extent that, you can almost see the tires shrink as, day after day, the tread (and your investment) turns into dust.

Quartz, silica, dolomite, basalt, iron ore and diamondiferous deposits are just some of the causes of tire abrasion.

In these instances, a quality abrasion resistant chain, such as RUD-Erlau's RING-LINK system, is ideal for creating a barrier between your tires and the ground.

The density of the mesh required will depend on the exact nature of the work site.

In every case, the mesh should be self-cleaning and the links specially hardened to resist wear at the points where they interact with the connecting rings.

RUD-Erlau state that you should expect a well-fitted, quality abrasion-resistant chain to more than double the life of your tires and, in many case, you can save by using part worn tires.

If you are working flint, slate and shale-like rocks, loading scrap metal or demolition debris, no matter how well constructed the tires may be, sudden-death, side-wall piercing is always a risk.

One-minute your loader crowds into the rock fall, the next moment it is slumped, immobile and you are on the phone looking for a temporary fix or a replacement tire.

If yours is a small operation, this could put your entire production on costly standby

At best, repairs are a stop-gap.

Once the tire sidewall has been penetrated the steel cords may be damaged and no amount of fillers, patches or vulcanizing can restore the tire's original integrity.

In these situations, the only guarantee of long-term plant availability is to protect the tire from the outset.

In these environments, RUD-Erlau would recommend a close meshed chain that embraces the entire tire surface and deflects sharp edged rocks.

Ideal chains would be the RING RING system

At some sites, where the terrain is either slippery or at altitudes where trucks have to contend with icy haul roads, poor traction can be a major problem.

Wrestling to control a loaded truck with a mind of its own is exhausting for the operator, can reduce concentration and risk 'losing' the truck with all the collateral damage that may involve.

Where the tire treads cannot provide sufficient displacement to ensure adequate grip, often the solution lies in simple, open ring link chain such as RUD-Erlau's GARANT series.

Where additional grip is required, RUD-Erlau would probably recommend Terra-plus with studded links for extra 'bite'.

In the narrow galleries of underground mines, low profile loaders and haulers can face a combination of abrasion, sidewall damage and poor handling.

Advanced alloys and a proprietary hardening method has produced the lightweight, energy-saving X19 FELS TORO a chain that resists abrasion so effectively that RUD-Erlau confidently claim a 30% longer service life.

Steel making pushes machines to limits not experienced in most other industries.

Pot handlers carry ladles full of molten metal and wheeled loaders shift fiery slag for reprocessing.

Here, where tire protection chains have to absorb abrasive limestone ash and contend with extreme heat 24/7, unknown, unproven products are not an option.

These conditions require a robust chain such as RUD-Erlau's RING LOCKING system.

As technical advances have made them lighter, stronger and more durable, TPCs are no longer just an add-on.

When you factor in the experience, expertise and support that come with a quality TPC and, of course, the benefits of assured plant availability, the little extra you pay for a quality chain is be easily justified.

Studies have shown that TPCs are an investment that actually saves money.

Commercial confidentiality make it hard to get hold of reliable figures and these below are a little dated but this independent study from a European quarry should illustrate the benefits of TPCs and provide a basis for your own evaluation.

A set of TPCs will extend the life of your tires - new or part-worn - indefinitely.

And the cost advantages continue. Apart from scheduling a couple of hours, every now and then, for inspection and chain tensioning, your loaders and trucks should be fully available and delivering to order - giving you a competitive edge and satisfied customers.

Just as you need to be careful about your choice of tires and protection chain, so you should be discriminating in your choice of supplier.

Key considerations are:

● Availability: Does your supplier have the manufacturing muscle to deliver on time?

● Quality: Is the metallurgy, the welding and hardening verifiable to the highest standards?

● Range: Can the supplier supply chains to fit your tires and match your site conditions?

● Reputation: Is the manufacturer highly-regarded on the industry?

● Experience: How long has your supplier been manufacturing TPCs?

● Personnel: Do the metallurgists, designers, engineers have, long-time, hands-on in-depth experience of TPCs?

● Support: Does the supplier have a good network of offices to be there when you need them to provide you the needed after sales service and support?

● Value: Will your TPC investment pay for itself in terms of saving and productivity?

RUD joins the "Energy Efficiency Table (EET) East-Württemberg"

For the past three years, the topic of energy efficiency has played an ever-increasing role in the competition of "Talents and Patents in East-Württemberg".

RUD has actively participated in this competition in conjunction with the "Hohenlohe model" [Modell Hohenlohe] and in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce (IHK). The official name of the model project is "Energy Efficiency Table (EET) East-Württemberg" [Energieeffizienz-Tisch (EET) Ostwürttemberg]. As a "trademark" of sorts, there is even a logo that we, as an active "participant at the table", are allowed to display and use. The objective is to successfully reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions.

These are objectives that the leaders of the family-owned RUD Group are particularly dedicated to achieve for all of their manufacturing sites.

What has been accomplished so far? The nationally renowned trade magazine "PRODUKTION" took a closer look and revealed excellent results in an interview with Holger Menzel, Head of Environmental Protection, energy manager (IHK), waste management officer and dangerous goods safety adviser at RUD. To begin with, the title chosen for the article by PRODUKTION makes the direction clear: "Everyone pulls together on the efficiency chain!" In collaboration with specialists of the Hohenlohe model (Pfedelbach) and the engineering firm Eproplan Stuttgart, a total of 20 measures that generate an increase in energy efficiency while taking economic efficiency into account were identified.

As stated by the RUD official, Holger Menzel, these were measures that took effect in very specific areas of application over a period of three years. Compressed air, heating, lighting and water use for cooling processes stand out as examples and are the summation of more than 30 measures suggested during the initial consultation with specialists of the Hohenlohe model and the engineering firm Eproplan. From these suggestions, as mentioned above, we have already derived 20 measures that fit us perfectly and thus can be put into practice promptly and economically. For example, our electricians in particular immediately got busy implementing energy-saving processes.

The most important factor that must be considered for the prospect of success with regard to achieving any efficiency goal is employee motivation, explains Menzel. "These successes are not possible without an acute awareness for energy efficiency in all areas."

Cost-savings in cooling water consumption and compressed air generation as well as optimised compressor control are only a few examples to be mentioned – examples that "pay off", not only regarding the specific total of cost-savings, but also in an environmentally responsible energy balance. Saving several hundred-thousand kilowatt hours annually says more about this than a lot of words!

And because the family-owned RUD Group is one of just a few German companies to participate in the global "Cool Earth" initiative, environmentally responsible energy efficiency will be a hot topic not only in the German production facilities when it comes to future manufacturing development. It was not just by chance that we provided the "Expert tip" in last month's issue of REGIOBusiness!

In their summarising assessment, PRODUKTION states that "ecological awareness and environmental protection have always been an integral part of the company philosophy of the RUD Group, which is now owned by the fifth generation of the family."

And the central theme at RUD that will dominate the next few years is an active exchange of experiences, including exchange with other participants and networks in the region: This is because, according to Dr. Jörg S. Rieger, Managing Director of RUD, energy efficiency "is as much a social task as it is an economic necessity."

Consequently, the company has received its fifth Award in series for its revolutionary development the “ICE Chain System”.

On the 26th March 2010 the Sponsorship Award “Work - Safety - Health” was announced by the professional association of raw materials and chemical industry (BG RCI), sector of mining, for the 8th time in the categories Safety Engineering, Health Protection, Organization/Motivation, Manufacturer and Special Activities for apprentices. Here innovative, safety solutions were awarded, which offer an essential contribution to the case of work and health protection. The prize has a far reaching magnetic effect throughout the mining and quarrying industry focused on surface and underground mining, and it is considered as one of the most coveted awards.

The “ICE Grade 120 Mecano System” is a revolutionary chain system of slings for safe lifting and moving of heavy loads. With its so-called “Sceletto-technology” and a novel, patented steel, the system is more robust, cost efficient and ergonomic than its predecessors. The RUD Group is the first chain manufacturer in the world, which has received the approval stamp “D” for Grade 120 by the competent professional association “Metall Nord Süd“.

The “ICE Chain System” boast a specially developed ICE pink powder coating, which shows the effects of temperature in which the chain can be safely used. It is prohibited to use the ICE pink chain in temperatures of more than 300° C. This is clearly displayed by the ICE pink color turning brown-black. The “ICE Chains” must then be taken out of service or sent back to the manu-facturer for maintenance.

RUD Now Offers Four New Sizes of StarPoints®

RUD-Chain, Inc. has developed four new sizes of its popular swivel eyebolt, the StarPoint: VRS-M22; VRS-1/4” 20 UNC; VRS-5/16”-18UNC; VRS-7/16” -14UNC. The smaller UNC sizes were developed to meet the needs of the end-users. The new smaller sizes allow more versatility for lifting smaller loads.

The smaller sizes were developed because OEMs are using these sizes in their manufacturing facilities. For example, the new ¼” size was developed because the OEM was using two - ¼” eyebolts to lift a gear and rotating it 90°. Because any non-vertical lift on an eyebolt seriously diminishes the working load limit the OEM sought out a solution. The solution to this problem is the use of a proper lifting point, such as the RUD StarPoint swivel eyebolt. Prior to using the RUD StarPoint, the OEM was using a substantial amount of standard eyebolts because the eyebolts were being bent and damaged do to misuse. They also discovered that because of broken, busted or misused eyebolts they were breaking or harming the products and/or the machinery; many manufacturing organizations are unaware that the incorrect applications of eyebolts significantly increases the probability of failures no matter how large or small the load. It just made sense for RUD to offer a new size that would help the OEM correct this common problem.

The StarPoint adjusts to the direction of the pull which allows full engagement of the bolt and insures a safe lift. The StarPoint, like all of RUD’s products are forged from high-tensile steel and 100% electromagnetically crack tested. With a smaller thread size than the standard DIN 580 eyebolts and without the need for any additional lifting means, these modern lifting points pay for themselves quickly. The modern design prevents the lifting points and valuable loads from being damaged.

Using inappropriate lifting points or incorrectly using a lifting point could ultimately lead to a potentially catastrophic injury and/or a considerable loss of time in production! Many manufacturing organizations are unaware that the use of inappropriate lifting points and incorrect applications of eyebolts significantly increases the probability of failures. The solution to this problem is the use of proper lifting points that adjust to the direction of the pull which allows full engagement of the bolt, insuring a safe lift.

Up to now, the design of lifting points has not seriously considered the extent to which loads have to be turned and twisted during the handling process. With these turning movements, the loads can be damaged and/or the lifting system can be considerably overloaded. Properly torqued safety hoist rings are ideal for the needs of mold and die manufacturers. When a mold or die must be flipped, the lifting points need to swivel and pivot at the same time; any binding of the lifting points could be disastrous. The typical hoist ring uses a body, bushing and graphite-based lubricant to allow it to swivel, and an integrated oval or round eye to allow for pivoting. Another lifting point design uses ball bearings in the body to allow for swiveling and an integrated eye to allow for pivoting. The smoothness of the ball bearings makes this product perfect for this application. Due to the ball bearing design, the bolt is not required to be torqued to a specified value as long as the lifting point is flush to the surface of the tool being lifted. When a mold or die must be flipped, the center pull swiveling hoist ring and related lifting points are the appropriate tools. When a heavy tool is flipped, two lifting points are used on one side of the tool. As the load reaches its balance point and starts to fall onto its side, the lifting points need to both swivel and pivot at the same time, and the entire rigging unit (chains, wire rope, nylon sling, hooks and related hardware) must be properly designed and applied by the crane operator. Any binding of the lifting point could be catastrophic at this moment. The side pull style hoist ring also is well suited to 90-degree lifts and for the flipping of molds and dies (due to its swiveling and pivoting capabilities). This design offsets the mounting bolt 90 degrees from the lifting eye making for convenient side mounting to the tool.

Modern Eyebolts While not as prevalent as in the past, forged eyebolt use is still a common and potentially dangerous practice if not performed correctly. Any non-vertical torqued lift on an eyebolt seriously diminishes the working load limit. For example, an eyebolt rated for 2,000 pounds in a vertical plane only has a rating of 400 pounds (20 percent) at a 45-degree angle and only 300 pounds (15 percent) at a 90-degree angle. This also assumes the eye of the bolt remains fixed and shouldered to the load, which often is not the case because the common DIN-580 eyebolt is only to be lifted in the screwing direction or with a maximum inclination angle of 45°. A more recent style of lifting point is the true swiveling eyebolt, which allows the bolt to be threaded into the tool while independently allowing its eye to swivel a full 360°, giving the eyebolt the ability to adjust to the direction of the pull and allows full-engagement of the bolt insures a safe lift and prevents damage to valuable loads. This type of lifting point is available in a variety of sizes and is economically priced between a forged eyebolt and a swiveling hoist ring. A swivel eyebolt does not pivot, but for many applications this is not an issue. The hexagonal socket of the VRS StarPoint can be tightened by hand or a standard socket wrench. The eyebolt then is free to swivel 360° and can be used at any angle up to 90°. The hexagonal shape of the eye differentiates the StarPoint from an ordinary eyebolt. The StarPoint is forged from high-tensile steel. It is 100% electromagnetically crack tested, and has its rated load forged into the body for easy visibility.

The New Generation Because of the increasing demands for the safety and function of modern lifting points, RUD has developed the PowerPoint®-Generation; The PowerPoint-Star fulfills the demand for universal connection. The robust pink hook has the ability to pivot in any direction, allowing all common sling types to be quickly and safely attached without using additional hardware (e.g. shackles). The optimized design allows for jerk-free turning and prevents the lifting points, as well as the load from being damaged. The double ball-bearing guarantees that even under a full load, the PowerPoint® can be turned in a 90° position from the bolt center line. All of the PowerPoint mounting bases, together with associated hook and ring combinations, have Working Load Limit (WLL) ratings equivalent to the market leading RUD VIP sling chain system - therefore offering a 25% increase in the load ratings applicable to equivalently sized Grade 80 chain and components.

Requirements of modern lifting points:

□ Clear indication of working load limit in metric tons and lbs. for side loading applications

□ Smallest thread for bolt-on applications. Lifting points for welding: can be welded on the smallest place without pre-treatment.
□ Offers the designer great flexibility

With modern lifting points – save costs! With a smaller thread size than the standard DIN 580 eyebolts and without the need for any additional lifting means, these modern lifting points pay for themselves quickly. The modern design prevents the lifting points and valuable loads from being damaged. Modern lifting points also save valuable production time because there is no need for additional equipment and no wasted time changing lifting devices. Currently, the demands are fulfilled by only one lifting point series. For 25 years, the company RUD Chain, Inc. has continued to strive to develop a safer means of lifting. All RUD lifting points are tested to ensure quality and safety.

Why are RUD Lifting Points “Pink”? Distinct Florescent pink powder coating in not only highly visible, it is a heat indicator. The special fluorescent pink powder coating permanently changes color at increased temperatures. If chain reaches temperatures above 400°C, the color changes to a deep black with small bubbles, indicating that the chain has been over-heated; the VIP component should not be used at this high temperature. The special fluorescent pink powder coating permanently highlights the maximum temperature at which the VIP chain has been used.

The Power of “Pink” The pink lifting points also give you 25% more WLL than the highest existing quality Grade T, 8 or 80. RUD products are made from CrNiMo-special steel, which is quenched and tempered to produce unique characteristics of high toughness and minimum ultimate elongation for natural black >25%, surface treated >20%. VIP is less sensitive to notching and hydrogen embrittlement than quality Grade T, 8 or 80. The bending test, according to DIN or EN standards is far exceeded by VIP. The high quality VIP chains and components have a duplex surface protection. Due to the two stages, i.e. pretreatment and pink powder coating, a considerably better surface protection is obtained compared to normal zinc plating.

The phones have been going crazy the past week with “Slag” orders in the Tire Protection Chain (TPC) department. Since last Wednesday, the TPC service team (Brian, Josh, Chris and Jason) have built 12 chains from scratch. The TPC team has recently started another order consisting of 6 chains that require the same process of cutting down larger chains, assembling and welding.

Next week we will receive 6 Guard chains from Erlau and have an additional customer orders for another 22pcs. With the recent Customer commitments we continue to grow our market share. We could not be more proud of the extra effort of the TPC team for putting in the extra time and effort to keep Erlau number 1 in the Tire Protection Chain Industry!
